Description
A typographic exploration into the presence of letters from the alphabet in the world around us. Stemming from interest in the shapes and forms naturally created by objects when in their organic setting, I ventured out on a couple week journey photographing the alphabet with the use of camera angles. There was no external manipulation or movement of the objects done by me.
Being a very on the spot photography moment the decision to photograph with my mobile phone at the time was taken so as to keep consistency in quality and not overcomplicate the process.
Due to the informal approach taken for photography, I wanted the method of display to reflect this same decision. Rather than having the images mounted and framed like a professional print, they were printed on photographic paper and placed in a polaroid sized album. To contextualise this image and show the path I took to reach the stage of capture, I added a sentence long personal observation to the album, written in my handwriting. This ultimately created an entire album that decoded the image of the letter. The letters and corresponding writing is shown in the below slideshow.
Adding to this project, I created a second album that contained only the photographed letters in it, forming actual words that became a sentence. The message within the album reads “The shore is where anyone can get a hamburger dude I just made your dream come true welcome to the bottom pal”. Playing on the fact that art can take an extremely conceptual turn filled with meaning, the sentence chosen was tweeted by a bot I had experimented with for another project (@bottboy).
The idea behind this choice was that a viewer would sit and decode what was written, just to be presented with a load of random gibberish. While the reader would have a choice to to add value to what was presented to them, there was no actual motive behind the writing. Not only is the message a dig at the meaning of art, but also a laugh at nature of coded language.
